New International Version (NIV)
Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.”
What are the unclean things?
In 2 Corinthians 6, Paul talks about how God dwells within us – we are the temple of the living God. Consequently, we need to separate ourselves from unbelievers; the worldly culture that surrounds us. To illustrate God’s desire that we separate ourselves, in verse 17 Paul quotes from the Old Testament – Isaiah 52:11 – when God similarly instructed the Jewish exiles to get out of pagan Babylon and return to Judea, i.e. to separate themselves from that unclean, pagan place. 2 Corinthians 6:17 shouldn’t be interpreted as meaning that there are actual unclean things that we shouldn’t touch. Christianity holds no such rules.
