Devotional on Psalm 36:9
The Fountain of Life
Psalm 36:9 (ESV) — “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.”
In this short but rich verse, David captures two essential truths about God: He is both the source of life and the source of light. In a world often marked by confusion, chaos, and spiritual dryness, this verse reminds us that true life and clarity are found in God alone.
When David speaks of the “fountain of life,” he uses an image of abundance, refreshment, and renewal. A fountain is not a stagnant pool but a bubbling, ever-flowing source of water. In a dry and weary land, a fountain is hope itself. So it is with God—He is not just a giver of life, but the very fountain from which life flows. Physical life, spiritual vitality, and eternal hope all begin and continue in Him. Jesus echoes this in John 4:14, promising living water to those who believe in Him—a spring welling up to eternal life.
David also writes, “in your light do we see light.” Light reveals truth, guides our steps, and chases away darkness. But it is only in God’s light that we truly see. Our understanding, our sense of purpose, our direction in life—all become clear only when illuminated by God’s truth. His Word, His presence, and His Spirit bring clarity where the world brings confusion.
Are you feeling dry or lost today? Come to the fountain. Let your soul be refreshed by time in God’s Word, in prayer, and in worship. Are you struggling to make sense of your circumstances or the world around you? Seek God’s light. His perspective will bring truth into focus.
God doesn’t withhold His life or His light. He invites us into it—freely and abundantly.
Prayer:
Lord, You are the fountain of life and the light that helps me see clearly. Refresh my heart with Your presence today. Where I am weary, renew me. Where I am confused, guide me with Your truth. Help me to walk in Your light and find joy in the life You provide. Amen.
Thank You and God Bless
