The Humble Are Lifted Up
Proverbs 29:23 (ESV) — “One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.”

Pride and humility are central themes throughout the book of Proverbs. In Proverbs 29:23, Solomon gives a timeless truth that continues to echo in every generation: pride leads to a fall, but humility leads to honor. This principle applies to individuals, families, churches, and even nations.

“One’s pride will bring him low…” Pride is a silent but dangerous enemy. It convinces us that we’re self-sufficient, better than others, or above correction. It can take root in the heart subtly—through a desire for recognition, resistance to accountability, or an unwillingness to admit weakness. Yet Scripture is clear: pride sets us on a path toward destruction (see Proverbs 16:18). God opposes the proud (James 4:6), not because He is cruel, but because pride blinds us to our need for Him.

On the other hand, “he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.” This is the paradox of the kingdom of God. True greatness is found in humility. Jesus taught this when He said, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12). To be lowly in spirit is not to think less of yourself but to see yourself rightly—in light of God’s holiness and grace.

Humility opens the door for God’s blessing. It creates room for growth, healing, and transformation. A humble person listens well, repents quickly, and serves others gladly. And in due time, God promises to lift up the humble—not with worldly applause, but with the honor that comes from Him.

In a world that values self-promotion, Proverbs 29:23 calls us to a different way: the way of Christ, who humbled Himself and became obedient to death—and was therefore exalted by the Father (Philippians 2:8–9).

Prayer:
Lord, protect my heart from pride. Help me to walk in humility, recognizing my constant need for You. Teach me to serve others, listen with grace, and live in a way that honors You. May I find joy not in lifting myself up, but in being lifted by Your hand. Amen.

Thank You and God Bless
