Devotional on Psalm 78:32
When Signs Are Not Enough
Psalm 78:32 (ESV) — “In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe.”
Psalm 78 is a powerful and sobering reflection on the history of Israel’s relationship with God. It recounts how God performed mighty wonders—rescuing His people from Egypt, parting the Red Sea, providing manna and water in the wilderness—yet His people still struggled with unbelief. Verse 32 strikes a heartbreaking chord: “In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe.”
This verse reveals a critical truth: seeing miracles does not guarantee faith. The Israelites witnessed God’s power with their own eyes. They experienced His provision, guidance, and protection. Yet their hearts remained hardened. They continued in disobedience, failing to trust the One who had shown Himself faithful again and again.
It’s easy to read this verse and wonder how they could be so blind. But if we’re honest, we can see ourselves in this story. How often do we forget God’s past faithfulness when a new challenge arises? How many times has God answered prayer, opened doors, or shown mercy—only for us to doubt Him the next time we’re tested?
This verse reminds us that faith is not rooted in spectacular signs, but in a heart that trusts God’s character. Miracles can point us to God, but it is His Word and His Spirit that build lasting belief. Jesus echoed this truth when He said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29).
God desires a relationship built not on momentary awe, but on steadfast trust. He is still performing wonders today—through creation, through answered prayer, through the gospel. But even more, He is calling us to walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).
Prayer:
Father, forgive me for the times I’ve doubted You, even after seeing Your faithfulness in my life. Strengthen my faith not only through what You do, but through who You are. Teach me to trust You fully, even when I cannot see. Help me to believe and obey, resting in Your unchanging goodness. Amen.
Thank You and God Bless
