Devotional on Philippians 1:21
Living for Christ, Dying in Gain
Philippians 1:21 (ESV) — “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
In this short yet powerful verse, the Apostle Paul expresses the heartbeat of the Christian life. “To live is Christ, and to die is gain.” These words reflect total devotion, a life wholly centered on Jesus and the eternal hope that lies beyond this world.
“To live is Christ” means that every breath we take, every moment we have, and every decision we make is meant to glorify Jesus. For Paul, life wasn’t about personal success, comfort, or reputation. It was about knowing Christ, serving Him, preaching His gospel, and helping others grow in faith. Christ was the reason, the strength, and the goal of Paul’s life. His identity and purpose were wrapped entirely in who Jesus is.
This challenges us to ask: What are we living for? Is Christ the center of our daily lives, or just a part of it? To live for Christ means allowing His Word to shape our thoughts, His Spirit to guide our actions, and His love to flow through us into the lives of others.
Then Paul adds something even more astounding: “to die is gain.” For the world, death is loss—loss of pleasure, relationships, and life itself. But for the believer, death is not the end. It is the doorway to eternal life with Christ. Paul looked forward to being in the presence of Jesus, where suffering would cease and joy would be complete.
This verse isn’t a death wish—it’s a declaration of hope. Paul longed to remain and serve others, but he knew that when his time came, death would bring him closer to the Savior he loved.
May we live with the same eternal perspective. Whether in life or in death, Christ is our treasure.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to say with Paul, “To live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Teach me to live every day for You, with purpose and joy. Fix my eyes on eternity and fill my heart with the hope of being with You forever. Amen.
Thank You and God Bless
