Devotional on James 5:16-18
The Power of a Righteous Prayer
James 5:16–18 (ESV) — “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.”
In James 5:16–18, we are reminded of the powerful gift of prayer, especially when it flows from a life of righteousness and faith. James encourages us to confess our sins to one another—not for shame, but for healing. Unconfessed sin can block the flow of spiritual health in our lives and communities. But when we walk in humble honesty, God brings restoration.
James then makes a bold statement: “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” Prayer is not a last resort. It is a mighty, God-ordained means of bringing His will into our lives and situations. When we are living in obedience to Christ, our prayers are effective—not because we are perfect, but because we are aligned with God’s heart.
To emphasize this truth, James points to Elijah. Though he was a prophet, James reminds us, “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours.” He wasn’t superhuman. He struggled and feared, yet he prayed with faith—and God responded. Elijah’s prayers shut the heavens for three and a half years, and then reopened them. His example shows us what God can do through the earnest prayers of one ordinary believer who trusts in an extraordinary God.
Prayer is not about eloquence or quantity—it’s about faith, righteousness, and persistence. When we are right with God and one another, our prayers carry divine power. Healing, change, and miracles can flow from a simple prayer lifted up in faith.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the gift and power of prayer. Help me walk in righteousness, confessing my sins and lifting others in prayer. Increase my faith, like Elijah’s, to believe that You will move as I seek Your will. Amen.
Thank You and God Bless
