Devotional on Matthew 28:18 – Authority and Commission
Matthew 28:18 (ESV) And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
In the closing verses of Matthew, we encounter one of Jesus’ most powerful declarations. With the weight of His resurrection behind Him, He proclaims that all authority in heaven and on earth belongs to Him. This is not a mere statement of fact; it’s an affirmation that shapes our understanding of His lordship and our mission as His followers.
Understanding His authority is foundational for our faith. Jesus holds the highest position of power over the universe—nothing is outside His control. This truth comforts us amidst chaos, uncertainty, and trials. When we face challenges, whether personal or in our communities, we can rest assured that Jesus reigns supreme. His authority reassures us that our prayers hold weight, our worship is heard, and our acts of faith are not in vain.
Moreover, Jesus follows this profound statement with a commission to His disciples: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” The authority given to Him empowers us to carry out His mission. His command is both a privilege and a responsibility. We are invited to participate in the transformative work of the Kingdom by sharing His love and truth with others, extending His grace to every corner of the earth.
As we reflect on this verse today, it provokes us to consider our role in fulfilling the Great Commission. Are we living as bold witnesses of His authority? Are we engaged in making disciples in our families, workplaces, and communities?
Jesus’ authority not only compels us but also equips us. As we step onto the mission field—whether that be across the street or across the globe—we do so under His power, confident that He is with us. Let His all-encompassing authority stir our hearts to action, that we may share the hope we have found in Him with those around us.
Thank You and God Bless
