Devotional on 1 Samuel 2:6-7
In 1 Samuel 2:6-7, we find a powerful declaration from Hannah, echoing the profound truths of God’s sovereignty and justice in the world. “The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts.” These verses remind us that God is intimately involved in the workings of our lives and the fabric of creation, wielding ultimate authority over life’s circumstances.
Hannah, who once faced deep anguish due to her barrenness, experienced a miraculous turn in her life. God granted her a son, Samuel, and in her prayer of thanksgiving, she acknowledges His power over life and death, humility and prosperity. This acknowledgment invites us to reflect on our own wavering trust amid life’s uncertainties and the challenges we face.
When life feels overwhelmingly difficult, it’s easy to question God’s goodness and purpose. Yet Hannah’s song teaches us that even in times of struggle or apparent abandonment, God’s hand is at work. He is not a distant observer; He is a righteous judge who allows both suffering and blessing for His divine purposes. His ways might be beyond our understanding, but they are always motivated by love.
The duality of God’s actions—bringing low and exalting, making poor and rich—speaks to the cyclical nature of our human condition. We can identify moments of lowliness in our lives, as well as times of upliftment. In all circumstances, we are called to trust God, recognizing His authority over both our trials and triumphs.
As we meditate on this truth, let us remember that God’s plans often align with His greater redemptive story. Let us lean into our faith, embracing both the highs and lows, confident that He is sovereign. Today, approach God not just with your desires but also with a heart open to His will, trusting He is working all things for good in your life and the lives of those around you.
Thank You and God Bless
