1 Peter 2:24 Devotional

Devotional on 1 Peter 2:24He Bore Our Sins

Scripture: 1 Peter 2:24 (ESV) – “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”

This verse from 1 Peter captures the heart of the gospel in a single sentence. It speaks of the immense love and suffering of Christ, the purpose of His sacrifice, and the healing that flows from His wounds.

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree…”
Jesus didn’t send someone else—He Himself took our place. The weight of our sin—the guilt, shame, and penalty we deserved—He bore in His own sinless body on the cross. The “tree” refers to the cross, a place of cursing (Deuteronomy 21:23), reminding us that Jesus became a curse for us so that we might receive blessing (Galatians 3:13). This was no distant act of charity. It was personal, sacrificial love.

“…that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.”
Christ didn’t die only to forgive us; He died to transform us. To “die to sin” means turning from its power and influence. It means we no longer live under its control. And to “live to righteousness” means we are now empowered to walk in obedience, holiness, and love. We are not saved by our good works, but we are saved for good works (Ephesians 2:10). His grace gives us both pardon and purpose.

“By his wounds you have been healed.”
This healing is first and foremost spiritual. Sin wounds us deeply, breaking our fellowship with God. But through Christ’s suffering, we are restored—made whole again. The wounds of Jesus purchased our peace. And while physical healing may also flow from His mercy, the greatest healing is reconciliation with the Father and the renewal of our hearts.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for bearing my sins on the cross. Thank You for the healing and righteousness that come through Your sacrifice. Help me to live each day dead to sin and alive to You. Strengthen me to walk in obedience, and fill my heart with gratitude for Your grace. In Your name, Amen.

Thank You and God Bless
